Sanctuary

Since ancient times, people have attached a special and sacral significance to Khortytsia.

Since ancient times, the Khortytsia cliffs have attracted people who gave this place a special, sacral significance. It’s no wonder that the island has preserved unique religious complexes from different eras. Some of them are older than the famous Egyptian pyramids. These stone structures were used for religious ceremonies, funerals, and to track the path of the celestial bodies.

Many archaeological sites from different times, such as burial mounds and moundless burial complexes, stone religious buildings, and ancient colonies and settlements, prove that the island of Khortytsia was a spiritual center that brought together different eras, nationalities, and cultures. On Khortytsia, the most famous religious buildings are the Eneolithic cromlech complex, the sanctuary-observatory, the Bronze Age sanctuary, the sanctuary of Karakaika, and the complex of pit culture Generalka 2.

Currently, the archaeologists are researching the island Baida, and work continues at the site of Generalka 2 and the second part of the sanctuary of Karakaika.
