The observation area of the museum and the pre-museum area became a platform for official and cultural events. Lyceum students, police, and military personnel take oaths here. It was from the roof of our museum that October 14 was declared a national holiday – The Day of Defender of Ukraine. Orchestras and theaters play here. People organize meetings and workshops. Every year, the documentary film festival gathers hundreds of people here for screenings of documentaries. In 2021, on the initiative of the President of Ukraine, the reconstruction of the Museum of the Zaporozhzhia Cossacks History began.
One can enjoy a fantastic view of the Dnipro, rocky rapids, and Dniprohes here. Next to the museum is Unity Hill, with an observation deck where the state flag flies. The Hill of Unity is an exceptional object that has become a decorative feature of Khortytsia. Its centerpiece is the “Circle (Kolo) of Unity,” a metal ring measuring 7 meters in height and coated with corten. The collective of authors of the “Circle of Unity” art object was headed by Bohdan Kryvosheya. According to the authors’ idea, this art object has many meanings and interpretations.
First, the Circle of Unity symbolizes cohesion for the sake of the future. While gathering in a circle, the Zaporozhzhia Cossacks consulted, discussed, debated and made decisions. The island should return to its glory as a place of social harmony.
Secondly, the “Circle of Unity” is the sun. After all, the island of Khortytsia comes from the name of the Slavic God of the Sun – Hors.
Currently, active work is underway on the reconstruction of the museum space. Over time, a location will appear to discuss socially essential topics and issues of local and national importance. Eventually, this space can gather a community of world leaders. After all, Khortytsia, an island in the middle of the Dnipro and a sacred place between two banks, has always been a place of unification.
The newly renovated hill, which is equipped with a comfortable climb, an observation deck, and a renovated flagpole, is designed to be as barrier-free and comfortable as possible for every visitor. The path to the hill with the observation deck is built at an angle of 5%, which meets accessibility standards. It also has recreation areas.
Climbing Unity Hill allows you to admire the beauty of Khortytsia’s nature. Moreover, thanks to the audio exhibition “The Way,” prepared by Vlad Troitskyi’s team, you will immerse yourself in the search for an answer to the eternal question: Who are we?

The “Taras Shevchenko Trail” has been arranged along the coast to the museum. It is dedicated to the young poet Taras Shevchenko’s stay at Khortytsia in the summer of 1843. Walking along the trail, one can notice the excerpts from the works of Velyky Kobzar, which mention Khortytsia, the Dnipro rapids, Zaporozhzhia Velykyi Luh, and Zaporozhzhia Cossacks.
Nearby is also the “Cossack Circle” square—the large-scale festival “Pokrova on Khortytsia” is traditionally held here, gathering thousands of residents and tourists. Mass events, team-building exercises, and night performances are also held at the “Cossack circle.” In 2021, the Maidan was opened, and the family festival “Festival of Family Values and Traditions” was held here. Additionally, the Winter Residence of St. Nicholas was operating.
The museum space is equipped with infrastructure: parking lots, bicycle rental, cafés and coffee shops.
