Lecture “Religion and Church in Cossack Times”
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 12:00, Oleksandr Surchenko will hold a lecture “Religion and Church in Cossack Times” in the historical and cultural complex “Zaporozhzhia Sich”.
For centuries, the religious worldview has been decisive for all peoples of Europe and the world. It was an ideological and spiritual basis for the organization of the state power, the system of social relations, which formed the mentality and culture of nations. Belonging to a particular religion was a marker of “friend or foe”, and religious conflicts were the most brutal and bloody.
What were religion and the church like in Ukraine during Cossack times? What did the Zaporozhians believe in and whom did they worship? How was the spirit of chivalry combined with religion, and what was the religious rite of the Cossacks?
You will hear the answers to these and other important questions at the upcoming lecture.
The lecture is free of charge. Visitors must only pay the entrance fee to the historical and cultural complex.
