THE FIRST EXHIBITION OF THE KHORTYTSIA NATIONAL RESERVE
After the Museum Selfie Day contest “Find the first exhibit of the museum”, we finally revealed the secret.
The first officially registered artifact under No.1 in the State Historical and Cultural Reserve of the Zaporozhian Cossacks on Khortytsia Island (our reserve had this name at the time) was the “Iron cannonball (fragment), late 18th century.”
Volodymyr Mykolayovych Shovkun, the famous Zaporozhian local historian, public figure, and reserve employee, discovered the find and handed it to the museum funds on 05.02.1971.
This discovery led to archaeological excavations in the summer of 1971, under the leadership of the reserve’s first director, Arnold Leonidovich Sokulsky, on the territory of the “Zaporozhzhia Shipyard of 1738. “During the research on the fortifications’ remains, 357 objects (cores, ceramics, buttons) were found, which laid the foundation for the Khortytsia National Reserve’s fund collections.
