Cooperation between scientists of the Vasa Museum (Sweden) and the Khortytsia National Reserve continues

The scientific director of the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, a world-renowned researcher in the history of ships and a specialist in Sweden’s underwater history, Mr. Fred Hawker, visited the Khortytsia National Reserve in April to collaborate on joint scientific projects.

Fred Hawker met with Director General Valeryi Shevchenko, a team of scientists, archaeologists, and restorers from the reserve, during which the prospects for joint fieldwork and training of our specialists abroad were discussed. Mr. Hawker was briefed on the state of underwater monuments that had been discovered on the island’s coasts following the change in water level.

It was the second time Fred Hawker visited the Khortytsia National Reserve on a working trip. In May 2023, the representatives of Swedish science had already visited the island to document and create three-dimensional models of ancient ships stored in Zaporizhzhia.

We are grateful to our Swedish colleagues for their help and support!
