KOLODIY ON KHORTYTSYA
KOLODIY ON KHORTYTSYA
Kolodiy, or Masnytsia, is an ancient Ukrainian holiday that symbolizes the farewell of winter and the meeting of spring. It is a time of fun, folk traditions, and delicious food.
Since pre-Christian times, Kolodiy has been closely associated with fertility, marriage, and family values. During this time, girls and boys looked for a partner, and those who delayed were given a “kolodka” – a symbolic punishment for loneliness.
The main tradition of the holiday was as follows: On Monday morning, married women gathered in a tavern to prepare various delicacies. Pancakes and dumplings, round, like the sun, were a must and symbolized warmth and abundance.
One of the women brought a log or a stick – this was the “kolodka”. It was wrapped in a cloth as if swaddling a baby, symbolizing its birth as the main attribute of the holiday. Each day of the week personified a particular stage of the human life cycle. On Monday, the “kolodka” was born; on Tuesday, it was “christened”, and on Wednesday, the “christening” was celebrated. This day was the most magnificent because even unmarried people and children could participate in the celebrations. On Thursday, the “kolodka” was already “dying”, on Friday, it was “buried”, and on Saturday, it was “mourned”. The end of its symbolic life was celebrated on Forgiveness Sunday.
On Forgiveness Sunday, people asked each other for forgiveness to enter a new life cycle with a pure soul.
Like most folk holidays and customs, Kolodiy acquired a Christian religious meaning, but most of the celebration’s traditions remained unchanged.
Kolodiy is a tradition and a living part of our culture. Its celebrations remind us that life is short and that it is essential to appreciate every moment and care for family and loved ones.
So let’s celebrate Ukrainian holidays, preserve customs, and believe that spring, warmth, and light will definitely defeat winter, cold, and darkness!
