“MENNONITE SIGHTS OF KHORTYTSIA ISLAND”

We invite citizens of Zaporizhzia and city guests to the lecture!

“These are the children of the world, who will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into sickles, and will know no war again” – this is how Menno Simons, the founder of this Protestant movement, described the Mennonites in 1537.

Communities of this Protestant denomination appeared in the Zaporizhzhia region at the end of the 18th century. As early as 1789, 8 German settlements were founded in the Khortytsia tract, and later entire Mennonite colonies were established.

In a short time, the Mennonites learned the Ukrainian language and could communicate freely with the Ukrainians.

What do we know today about the lives and daily activities of our Mennonite neighbors? What material evidence of their culture remains in our country? What do the artifacts found at the sites of their settlements tell us?

You will get answers to these and other questions at the upcoming lecture on October 19, 2024 (Saturday) at 11:00 a.m. in the Museum Studios “The City Beyond the Rapids” (in the very center of the city) at the address: Zaporizhzhia, Tsentralnyi Boulevard, 3 (“House of Shoes”, 2nd floor).

The event is FREE!
