THE LECTURE “RELIGION AND CHURCH IN COSSACK TIMES” Khortytsia National Reserve invites you!

The lecture will address one of the most fundamental questions regarding understanding the Zaporozhzhia Cossacks as a unique historical and cultural phenomenon—religion and the church in Cossack times.

Religion was decisive for all the peoples of Europe and the world at that time. It was an ideological and spiritual basis for the organization of state power and the system of social relations and formed the mentality and culture of nations. Religion was a marker of belonging, and the religious conflicts of that time were the most violent and bloody.

What were religion and the church like in Cossack times? What beliefs did the Zaporozhzhia Cossacks hold, and whom did they venerate? How was the spirit of chivalry combined with religion, and what was the religious rite of the Cossacks?
