THE MEMORY OF THE PRAYERFUL HETMAN OF THE ZAPOROZHIAN ARMY, PETRO KONASHEVYCH-SAHAYDACHNY, WAS HONORED IN THE SICH CHURCH OF THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL COMPLEX “ZAPOROZHZHIA SICH”

Four hundred three years ago in Kyiv, the glorious Hetman of the Zaporizhian Army, Petro Konashevych-Sahaydachny, passed away from wounds received in the battle of Khotyn.

“He was a man of great spirit, who sought danger himself, took life lightly, was agile and active in the battle, in the camp he was prudent, slept little and did not drink… he was cautious at meetings and taciturn in all conversations” – so one of his contemporaries characterized him.

His figure embodies the image of a worthy knight, a wise politician, and a diplomat. Courage, firmness, and justice were the main virtues that determined his life. Among the priorities of his activities were the achievement of political independence of the Ukrainian people, the development of education, the protection of the Orthodox faith, the return of the right of Ukrainians to their church, and the development of the army.

Hetman Sahaydachny remained faithful to Zaporozhian society and Ukraine until his last breath, which earned him great authority and respect among the Cossack people.

In the Mother of God Church of the historical and cultural complex “Zaporozhzhia Sich” a memorial service in honor of the venerable Hetman Petro Konashevych-Sahaydachny was held with the participation of veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war, representatives of public organizations and the Cossack community of Zaporizhzhia, the association “Spas” and employees of the Khortytsia National Reserve.

The chaplains held a prayer service in honor of Hetman Sahaydachny, after which the participants recalled his glorious deeds. Serhiy Dudarenko, the head of the scientific and educational department of the Khortytsia National Reserve, gave a speech about the role and significance of Petro Sahaydachny in the history of Ukraine.

The image of the pious Hetman Petro Konashevych-Sahaydachny still impresses with its relevance and remains a vivid example of service to the Cossack people and love for the Motherland.
