WE INVITE THE RESIDENTS AND GUESTS OF THE CITY TO THE LECTURE “MENNONITE SIGHTS OF KHORTYTSIA ISLAND”
“They are the children of peace who have beaten their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks and know of no war.” – this is how Menno Simons, the founder of this Protestant movement, characterized the Mennonites in 1537.
Mennonites preached the rejection of violence and murder for any reason and circumstances, were hardworking, and had a high level of literacy.
Communities of this Protestant denomination emerged in the Zaporizhzhia lands in the late 18th century. In 1789, they formed eight German settlements in the Khortytsia tract, later establishing entire Mennonite colonies.
In a short time, the Mennonites learned the Ukrainian language and communicated freely with Ukrainians.
What do we currently understand about the daily life of our Mennonite neighbors? What tangible remnants of their culture have we discovered in our lands? What insights can we gain from the artifacts unearthed in their settlements?
You will receive the answer to these and other questions at the lecture, which will be held on June 8, 2024 (Saturday) at 11:00 a.m. in the Museum Studios “The City Beyond the Rapids” (in the center of the city) at the address: Zaporizhzhia, Tsentralnyi boulevard, 3 (“House of shoes”, 2nd floor).
