Wild animals immunization on Khortytsia Island
A spring campaign for oral immunization of wild carnivores against rabies by baiting them with the vaccine has started in the Zaporizhzhia region.
This week, 300 doses of the vaccine were spread on the territory of the Khortytsia National Reserve, which will help protect local wildlife: red fox, raccoon dog, badger, and some other wild animals. The implementation of the measures is supervised by specialists of the Main Department of the State Service for Food and Consumer Protection in the Zaporizhzhia region, in particular by the head of the department, Oleksandr Babenko, who visited Khortytsia during the vaccination.
According to the approved methodological recommendations, the vaccine is spread evenly over the designated area (except for settlements and significant water areas) at a rate of not less than 25 doses per square kilometer. These measures aim to ensure a stable epizootic situation regarding rabies among wild animals on the island. The vaccine is distributed in baits – small briquettes, similar to a box of matches, with the smell of meat-and-bone meal. Inside is a jelly-like capsule containing the vaccine.
Dear citizens!
The bait is not harmful to humans or the environment:
If you accidentally encounter such briquettes, do not touch them with your hands or move them from where they lie!
Immunization is an important step towards preserving the health of animals and people!
