Khortytsia National Reserve invites you!

THE LECTURE “ZAPOROZHZHIA VELYKYI LUH (THE GREAT MEADOW OF ZAPOROZHZHIA): BIRTH, DEATH, AND REVIVAL”

“Sich is the mother, Velykyi Luh is the father,” said the Zaporozhzhia Cossacks.

Velykyi Luh is historically a giant river floodplain with a total area of over 400 square km. It is a unique ecosystem with incredible natural resources and productivity. Fascinating information about this area can be found in the books by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus.

During Soviet rule, in the second half of the 1950s, the waters of the Kakhovka Reservoir flooded Velykyi Luh, and this natural complex remained only in legends, historical descriptions, and the memories of old-timers for future generations of Ukrainians.

On June 6, 2023, the Russian occupying forces destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, and the territory of Velykyi Luh, which had been under the waters of the artificial sea for 65 years, appeared to people.

What was the historical Velykyi Luh like? What do we know about it? What losses did Ukraine suffer when it was flooded (read – destroyed)? What natural processes began in the territory of Velykyi Luh after the water left in 2023? What awaits these territories shortly?

You will hear an exciting story about all this at the upcoming lecture on June 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the Museum Studios “The City Beyond the Rapids” at the address: Zaporizhzhia, Tsentralnyi Boulevard, 3 (2nd floor of the “House of Shoes”).

The ticket price is UAH 80.
